MIXED MESSAGES

I had a dream last night about a sign. It read, “big box here”. In my dream someone was packing a truck…shed? The sign was lying on the floor. They picked the sign up and read it, and shook their head, wondering what the sign meant; then they put the sign aside and started stacking boxes one at a time. When they got to the last box…a box a little bit bigger than the rest, it wouldn’t fit and they realized that the sign had been placed where the big box was supposed to be placed. First the big box, then all the other boxes around it. Not sure what the dream might have meant, but when I woke from the dream it was dark…the middle of the night, and I lay there thinking about some of the signs I have seen

One sign I remember read: ‘Divided highway ahead’. Which I thought was odd since the highway I was on was divided already, but it turned out that the opposing lanes were separated entirely by a wide space in between them. I don’t even remember what was between the two lanes after it became ‘divided’, but it still seemed odd to post a sign like that. It didn’t change how I was driving or the direction I was going in. Did it unsettle someone to come to a place where the road split and had a space between the two lanes so they had to warn people the division was just ahead of them?

Here in the USA we have exit signs nearly everywhere you go. In buildings, parking lots, and anywhere people might need help in leaving the area. In Britain exit signs read: ‘Way Out’. Now isn’t that a funny sign? Of course what popped into my mind was…, “OH, way out, Dude!” Do they not know or understand the word ‘exit’? And for the space in between a train and a platform as you are getting on or off the signs read: ‘Mind the Gap’, where here at home the sign would read: ‘Watch your step’. For the subway in England look for round, red signs that read, ‘Underground’. First time I saw that one I had to stop and puzzle over for a few minutes before I realized the signs were identifying the entrances and exits to the subway. And trying to follow the arrows and road signs on the freeway? Nightmare! Which lane do I need to be in?!! Left or right?!! Is this the way to San Jose?!!

Jesus said there would be signs for us to see that tell of the end times. Luke 21:25-26 “And there will be signs in the sun, in the moon, and in the stars; and on the earth distress of nations, with perplexity, the sea and the waves roaring; men’s hearts failing them from fear and the expectation of those things which are coming on the earth, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken.”

Paul wrote in II Tim. 3:1-5 But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: “For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away.”

Luke 21:11 “And there will be great earthquakes in various places and famines and pestilences; and there will be fearful sights and great signs from heaven.”

Signs are there to help us navigate….naturally and spiritually. We each have a still, small voice within us that also helps us read the signs we see and in hearing God’s voice so we know which way to go.

Deut. 31:6 “Be strong and of good courage, do not fear nor be afraid of them; for the Lord your God, He is the One who goes with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you.”

Heb. 13:5-6 “…..For He Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” So we may boldly say: The Lord is my helper; I will not fear. What can man do to me?”

The signs of the end times are all around us, but God is with His people; to lead them and to help them through these times. It is His promise to us and we can trust Him to always go with us no matter where life takes us.
