GOING FORWARD

Life is all about going forward; change and getting on with life. No matter what you have had to go through, are still going through or trying to get over…., whatever life has thrown at you, you keep moving. If you stop you stagnate, turn into a vegetable and cease living. Sometimes, it’s a long, hard road to recovery, but it is a road and in order to reach the end you have to keep going. Some get through it faster than others, but we shouldn’t judge ourselves by someone else’s progress. We are uniquely individual; we each travel at our own pace. The important thing is to keep moving.

I like that expression that is popular now: Keep calm, and carry on. It’s an English sentiment, one I admire them for, and you see that statement all over the place….on coffee mugs, t-shirts, jewelry and other things. When life knocks you down, you get back up, straighten your shoulders and keep moving forward.

There have been times in my life when I didn’t know how I could do that; but I reached up to my Heavenly Father, asked Him for strength to make it through and He always gave me what I needed to reach the other side of whatever dark hole I had found myself in. It usually didn’t happen overnight, but it did happen and eventually I found the strength and the courage to keep going. He opened doors for me that I thought were shut, He blessed me with new beginnings when I was sure I was finished.

When my financial well dried up, He refilled it. He caused me to find favor with a finance company so I could purchase a car when I needed one and my credit was shot. He led me to a mortgage broker that helped me get a loan to buy a house when my income was quite low. I have been able to make necessary repairs on my house when I wasn’t sure where the money would come from…, but it was there. He placed people in my life who blessed me with finances for things I couldn’t provide for myself. Always, He has provided for me in ways I could never have predicted.

Strength, courage, favor, assistance….whatever the need; He provided. Health and healing, peace, hope…are there when I reach out for them and ask in that precious name of Jesus. Even my yard is slowly coming into shape, one step at a time. Really, that’s all He asks us to do….take one step at a time; and trust in Him to provide whatever we are lacking in order to accomplish the task that is set before us. When I look back and see all that He has done for me, I can only stand and marvel at His greatness. Yes…so long as He is with me, I can keep calm and carry on. I can go forward and know He is with me every step of the way.

I was born in California, but both my parents were born in different areas of rural Oklahoma. My father grew up on a small cattle ranch and my mother grew up in the hills of eastern Oklahoma near the Ozark Mts. Both were born in the 1920's when Oklahoma was still more a part of the 1800's than the twentieth century so I like to say I was born of parents who were the last generation born during the old west. Their old west roots had a huge impact on my childhood. I spent the first three years of my life on my Granny's chicken farm. She was my father's grandmother and she owned 60 acres of alfalfa which she rented out and lived on three acres of barnyard where she raised chickens. There was some electricity, but no indoor plumbing outside of a faucet in the kitchen. The toilet was down the boardwalk in a small shed...in other words...an outhouse. The shower was a room under the water tank in the pumphouse. Granny's little three room house was the only painted building on the property. Everything else was raw, unpainted wood including the two room house my parents lived in. And I loved living on that little farm where I pretty much had free run of the barnyard and sometimes even wandered into the fields surrounding it. The town where I was born is along the Colorado River in the middle of the California desert and across the river from the Arizona desert and while we did live there for the first 12 years of my life, we moved a lot due to my father's employment. He was a big equipment operator and we moved to where the work took him, but usually only six months of the year then we moved back to our hometown. We moved to Northern California in 1958 and I have lived here ever since. I am a mother, a grandmother, have one great-grandchild and recently retired. I am divorced and now live with my youngest sister. My sisters and I like to cruise and take road trips. I am enjoying my life.
