My sister will be gone this weekend….going to our brother’s so they can all go to a Giant’s game! Sister, brother, his wife and their daughter; and sometimes their son and his wife! Baseball…the great American pasttime! Last year all of them went to Scottsdale in Arizona for the Giant’s spring training, where they watched them play and practice. They never miss a game and love going down to San Francisco sometimes to sit in the stadium and watch a game live.
My youngest son and his wife are also big time Giant’s fans. Last year they went to a game that got rained on and was interrupted for several hours before continuing to the end. So…my son and his wife waited until 11pm for the game to continue and stayed until it was over! which wasn’t until 1 or 2 in the morning. Then they came home! Amazing!!!
I don’t get it. I’m not a sports fan and the idea of sitting around through all that is crazy to my way of thinking. But, as a Christian, I will stand for an hour or more praising and worshipping God. In Africa, when they have big, open air meetings, people come from miles away to spend all day, or even days, hearing the word of God, praising Him, and seeing miracles happen. Some of them travel for days to get to those meetings! Some people think that is crazy. They don’t understand the love and devotion of God’s people to His presence. I can go to church tired from a sleepless night, but leave invigorated with His presence!
Eternity will be spent in His presence, worshipping and loving Him and receiving His love for us. And it is glorious!
Sports aren’t a bad thing, in fact I think they can be good; especially for children and young people as participants. It’s healthy to be active, to move, jump, run and to compete in wholesome ways. I’m not so keen on football, especially with so many football players disrespecting our country; but there is good there. Besides the physical exercise, there is discipline and values that are important to becoming healthy adults. But Jesus said, “what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and lose his own soul?” Mark 8:36.
All those beautiful, strong and healthy bodies will one day die, just the same as all the ugly and unhealthy ones. Being a mostly happy, well adjusted individual will not make death easier than for those who are unhappy and tormented unless there is a continuance into eternity that is joyous. We are all eternal beings. God created us that way. But God has an enemy who is now our enemy. We call him Satan, the devil, among other names. If we do not prepare ourselves to step into God’s glory, we will step into the horror that has been prepared for Satan. It’s one or the other. There is no other choice….and God has prepared the way for us through His own Son, Jesus. It’s so simple, yet so many reject it.
They scream and yell at a sports event, but think Christians are crazy when they do the same in their joy at being in God’s presence. Sometimes it just bursts forth….the wondrous joy; and sometimes we become very quiet, awed by His Majesty. Worshipping God is a wonderful thing and I am happy to go into His presence; to praise and worship Him, to hear His Word, to feel the love that flows all around and whether it is quiet or loud, it is always good. I’ll leave the sports to others. I will not laugh at their exuberance when they become excited because of the game. I know what that feels like. I feel it when I stand before my God and know He is as close as my own heart.
